This is one of the two months per year, February & May, that I love referring to this card. February due to Valentines Day & May for Beltane. These months are all about love & passion so naturally The Lovers card applies.
February or “Februa” in Latin means to cleanse & purify which initially makes me think of The Fool in all his pure, innocent glory BUT…I’m a hopeless romantic at heart and need to run with The Lovers for this month.
When looking at the card, it will usually show two people in a passionate embrace signifying a close, intimate relationship. Some cards show flames or hearts surrounding the couple & some cards have the Tree of Life & the Tree of Knowledge in the background.
When this card is pulled by the Seeker, it signals a commitment or partnership, choices that may need to be made or being at a crossroad. In the older traditions of Tarot, this card was used when choosing a life partner but today it can represent choices or decisions within an existing relationship or an indication of a new relationship.
The Lovers card can indicate love in any area of the seeker’s life including self- love. The Seeker is being asked to look at what love means to them in all the areas of their lives. Intimate or sexual relationships, family relationships or friendships or perhaps how the seeker feels about love in general.
If you’re a die-hard ooey, gooey romantic like myself, I immediately go in that ooey, gooey direction BUT this card can be about any relationship or partnership, not necessarily an intimate one. It signifies to the Seeker that some relationships in their lives will have or needs to have some focus.
The Lovers card has a dual meaning as most cards do which is that some choices will be arising or will need to be made. The card asks the Seeker to look at those choices with the idea of love behind the decisions. To be kind & compassionate either with themselves or the ones they are in the relationship/partnership with.
When this card meets you in a spread, it’s telling you to choose love. Whatever the relationships/partnerships or decisions are about, remind yourself to look to love for any possible answers and guidance. Love will always show you the way.
